What is GlasSand™?

GlasSand™

The Environmental Benefits of GlasSand™.

Instead of being wasted and thrown in the landfill, Vitreous Glass recycles post-consumer waste glass into a beneficial input for fibreglass insulation manufacturers. In our customers’ process, GlasSand replaces raw sand mined from the earth.

Fibreglass insulation is the most commonly used material to insulate homes in North America. Fibreglass insulation helps homes be more efficient, have lower energy consumption, and meet energy codes.

Key Environmental Advantages of GlasSand™:

  • Partnering with the beverage container recycling and collection (bottle depot) systems, all waste glass is sourced locally in Western Canada.

  • All our customers are within a 300 KM radius of our facility, right here in Alberta.

  • We use no water in the recycling process.

  • Allows customers furnaces to run at lower temperatures to use less energy and have an extended service life.

Using recycled glass in the manufacturing process*:

  • For every ton of glass recycled, more than a ton of natural resources is conserved.

  • Approximately 1 ton of carbon dioxide is reduced for every 6 tons of glass used.

Increasing recycled glass by 10% in the manufacturing process reduces*:

  • Particulates by 8%

  • Nitrogen oxide by 4%

  • Sulfur oxides by 10%
